If you just finished your junior year, you probably have a lot of questions about what to expect from your upcoming senior year, and from your senior photo session! Here in Boston, Massachusetts, and probably all of New England, the most popular time for seniors seems to be fall. Why? Do we really love foliage that much around here? Maybe… or are we just not good at planning ahead before those pesky yearbook deadlines?
Photographers know that fall is the busiest time in general–but the other seasons are also beautiful for photos too. This post is all about why you should consider summer for your senior session!

Warm weather
If you’re someone who likes summer weather, then it’s a perfect time for your photos to reflect you. Summer outfits, summer vibes, summer beaches…
Of course you can take beach photos at other times, but if you really want to get in the water, you probably want warmer temps.

If it’s too warm, then the upside is it’s easier to reschedule because my calendar isn’t jam-packed with sessions, and we’re not stressed about whether the leaves are going to turn too early/too late/not at all/fall off the trees in a storm/etc. (This is my way of saying you might hope for foliage in your photos, but there are never guarantees, so consider how important it really is to you!)
Scheduling is easier
Ah, summer… maybe you are working or traveling but you probably don’t have the crazy schedule that school sports and activities and homework bring with them. You also get later sunsets so even if you have to work until 5, we can still meet up afterward! And again, you aren’t fighting with everyone else in your graduating class for those prime autumn spots on my calendar.
You also might have smaller crowds at your location–unless your choice is the beach. For summer beach sessions (and even after Labor Day) I usually recommend a weeknight to minimize crowds.

We can have gorgeous summer nights here in New England with beautiful light at golden hour. Of course we can also have smoke from Canadian wildfires, summer thunderstorms, or high winds (especially on the coast). But if something causes us to need to reschedule, you don’t have school commitments to get in the way and we’ll have an easier time finding a new date.
More wardrobe options
Cute dresses are just made for summer… or shorts or rompers or whatever suits your style. You might even have a cool enough evening to throw on a sweater and jeans at the end. The weather can be unpredictable, but I think summer gives you the most possible options for what you might wear. Trust me, if your fall session ends up being chilly, that strappy, flowy dress you love isn’t going to make for good results.

Check something off the list early
As the mom of two young adults, I have first-hand experience with how many hoops you have to jump through during senior year. If you’re applying to college, especially early decision or early action, the fall has a very busy timeline to get all the things done, and most of them can’t be done before school starts. Take advantage of one thing that can!
You could also find your fall weekends busy with your last season of football games, dances, and homecoming. You deserve to enjoy those things to the fullest! But if weeknights are busy with homework and a job, you might find it hard to squeeze in another commitment.
Summer photos also give you more time during your senior year to enjoy your photos and share them. You also get more time for earning rewards through my referral program, since more of your friends probably haven’t booked a photographer yet!

If the practicality of a summer session sounds good but your vibe is really more of a different season, we have some options. This year I’m offering discounted spring mini sessions in 2026 for seniors who book in the summer or fall–the reason is so you can get photos in your cap and gown/college gear, but maybe you just love spring like I do. I’ve got you! You could even book a fall or winter mini session if you just have to have some shots with a different seasonal mood.
