This is an exciting journey for me. Photography has been something I always wanted to learn more about – someday. I think I said that for twenty years or more. Now that my kids are growing up, I’m starting to think about how I want to spend the rest of my life – and I feel pretty confident that whatever path I take, my camera will be with me.
When my family took a trip to Germany in August 2013, that’s when I think “someday” started to become “someday soon.” I took more photos there than I had in a long time – maybe ever on a digital camera, at least in a single month. I was capturing my kids’ first experience abroad, which was amazing. But I also found myself wanting to discover the artistry that lay waiting through the shutter of my simple point-and-shoot camera.
We came home from Germany and school started, and life was its normal crazy-busy self. I kept plugging away at all my responsibilities, but those photos stayed with me. It didn’t take long until I wasn’t satisfied with only my iPhone and my point-and-shoot. That led me to taking classes and learning everything I could, especially about shooting in manual and composition.
I didn’t really know where photography would lead me. Travel photography might encompass everything I love – but as much as I would enjoy it, I can’t travel all the time. (This is my new “someday.”) In all that I’ve learned so far, I feel like I’m settling into three categories: lifestyle (especially families, kids, and pets), photo styling and food/product photography, and fine art (everything else: landscape, macro, architecture, nature and wildlife, I kind of love it all). I decided that 2015 is going to be the year I launch a business and see where it might take me.
